What Is SEO?

by | Marketing

Search engine optimization, better termed as SEO, is a process through which the quality and amount of visitors to a website, are increased. SEO is essentially boosting the ranking/position of a website on a search engine like Google. Websites that are ranked on the first page of Google, receive 95% of the clicks. SEO is becoming increasingly difficult for small businesses as the number of websites on Search engines is increasing every second.  It’s likely that all of your competitors have a website and they are almost certainly listed on Google. That’s SEO in a nutshell. The real question is how is SEO done?

1. How to do SEO?

Ask an SEO expert, and they will undoubtedly make you feel that this is some black art that you cannot manage. We agree that it is a time consuming process, and it can be difficult to stay on top off. However, if you try to do it right; anyone can achieve it.

There are two types of SEO that you need to focus on; onsite SEO and off-site SEO. To get high traffic, you need to emphasis on both of these individually. These can be real tasks, and this is majorly why businesses tend to hire experts for this.

2. On-site SEO

On-site SEO focuses on the activities that go on on your website. This refers to the optimisation of the website. From your content to your relevancy and your accessibility; everything comes in onsite SEO. Here are some essential elements that you must focus upon when referring to onsite SEO:

  • User experience
  • Relative keywords
  • Website speed / load time
  • Image optimization
  • Minimising errors

These are not all the activities that are included in onsite SEO, but they are some of the basic ones.

3. Off-site SEO

Now, on the other hand, off-site SEO (as the name suggests) is all about the activities that take place outside the webpage.

A common method is link building. In a sentence, getting the biggest names possible to mention and putting a link to your website on their website. If your nephews blog with 50 visitors a month puts a link to your website, thats not going to do the trick.

If your local news station does an article on you and links to your website in the article, thats a good start.

If Forbes does an article on your busienss with a link to your website, your ranking on Google is about to get a serious upgrade. It’s essentially votes of trust for your webpage.

Some widespread activities that are a part of off-site SEO are as follows:

  • Digital PR
  • Content marketing
  • Influencer Marketing
  • Guest Blogging

There is a lot more that can be done to get in touch with other websites and businesses. Going to local blogger meetups can be a massive perk in off-site SEO as well.

Final Veredict

SEO is all about having a user friendly website, high-quality content and building your online network as much as possible. It is a long process with a slower return on investment than other marketing methods but is extremely valuable long term.
